Markings:

All signed Chen Ruixian (Tan Swie Hian) and NMandela, with one seal of the artist on 'Motivation' and five watermarks on the reverse of every litho-painting; dated 2004; 'Motivation' bears the following inscription: 'These sketches are not so much about my life as they are about my country, I draw hands because they are powerful instruments, hands can hurt or heal, punish or uplift. They can also be bowed but a quest for righteousness can never be repressed. In time, we broke lose (sic) the shackles of injustice, we joined hands across social divides and national boundaries, between continents and over oceans and now we look to the future, knowing that if ever age makes us wiser guards, it is the youth that reminds us of love, of trust, and the value of life.'

The Nelson Mandela Unity Series, World Economic Forum, Davos, Switzerland, 26 January 2005Equally well-known to the public are his paintings in oil, Chinese ink and acrylic, his sculptures, calligraphy, prints and seal engravings that have been in Singapore, Asia and around the world, winning him countless honours including the Gold Medal in Salon des Artistes Francais, Paris (1985), the Singapore Cultural Medallion (1987), the Seoul International Calligraphy Gold Medal (2002) and the Crystal Award from the World Economic Forum (2003). The Crystal Award was given for his contributions to cross cultural understanding across the globe. He was also conferred the Meritorious Service Medal (2003) by the President of Singapore, and the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters from Nanyang Technological University (2003)
